OXFORD United remain optimistic they will get at least one loan signing across the line before today’s deadline.

After 5pm the U’s will be unable to make changes to their squad until the transfer window opens in January.

They were already planning to be active in the market, but may be forced to do extra business after Danny Hylton and Ryan Taylor forced off during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Newport County.

The pair were due to be assessed yesterday, with Taylor’s tight groin – which has been an issue he has been managing for weeks – more of a concern than Hylton, who came off with stomach cramps.

Defensive reinforcement may also be required, depending on how skipper Jake Wright reacted on Tuesday to an injection for a back problem which has kept him out for a month.

Michael Appleton, United’s head coach, said: “It’s important we get to January making sure we have sufficient cover in certain areas so that we are more than competitive before the window opens.

“We are reasonably far down the line, but a lot of people are in a lot of races for players.

“If we’re lucky enough to bring one in then great, if not we’re just going to have to improvise with what we’ve got.

“Certainly we’re working around the clock to make sure, if we can bring someone in, they are the right type.”
