COMPETITION for places at Oxford United has been a hot topic for discussion this season.

While outfield players have been fighting for their place in the starting line-up, there is a quiet battle brewing for United’s No 1 shirt.

Sam Slocombe has started 18 matches in all competitions this season, but Benji Buchel has made quite an impression.

The Liechtenstein international did not have a shot to save on his debut against Swindon Town in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last month.

But he was far busier in the 1-1 draw against Braintree Town in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday and during the 2-0 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge on Wednesday.

While the 26-year-old has had to wait for his chance since signing at the beginning of September, he is eager to challenge Slocombe.

He said: “I am pushing him, he is pushing me, so we try to get the best out of each other.

“We like working together on a professional basis.

“He is a good guy, a nice guy, and I get on well with him, but it is about training, being professional and just giving your best.”

Buchel’s opportunities have been limited, but he felt there was no added pressure to perform during this week’s two cup ties.

“You always have to be careful,” he said.

“You don’t want to do too much, just play your normal game, do what you do in training and it is not in your hands.

“All I can do is just be professional.”
