ALEX MacDonald is set to receive a medal for the part he played in Burton Albion’s promotion campaign – and he plans to use it as motivation to win another next season with Oxford United.

The 25-year-old made 21 appearances for the Brewers in Sky Bet League Two before making the switch to the Kassam Stadium in February.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s men have since gone on to claim automatic promotion and a win in their final fixture, at Cambridge United tomorrow, will see them win the championship crown.

MacDonald does not know whether he will be invited to Burton’s post-season promotion celebrations, but he racked up enough games to be eligible for a medal.

He was well aware he was walking out on a chance to move up to League One when he moved to the U’s on deadline day.

But the winger plans to use the sight of his ex-teammates going up as an incentive.

He said: “I’ve been told I will be getting (a medal).

“It would be nice to get one, but my focus is on the last game of the season.

“It’s something you look back on at the end of your career, promotions and things.

“Personally I’m going to be doing my utmost next year to make sure it’s Oxford United.

“The way I’m looking at it, it’s definitely motivation.

“When I made the decision to come down here that was going to be something that was going to be hard to look back on.

“It spurs me on to do it with this club now.”
