DANNY Rose was delighted to get off the mark for the season with a well-taken second-half effort at Grimsby Town on Saturday.

The midfielder’s last goal for Oxford United came a year to the day when he scored in the 2-2 draw at home to Gateshead in last season’s FA Cup first round on November 9, 2013.

And Rose was pleased to be in the right place to net his first of the season six minutes after half-time in Saturday’s clash with a right foot effort.

“I have been trying to get into goalscoring positions more, and playing in that middle role you don’t get the chance to go forward too much,” he said.

Latest United news:

“But we had a foothold in the game and the opportunity was there for me to go on, and thankfully the ball fell kindly for me and I managed to keep it nice and low.

“Everyone keeps saying about me scoring with my right foot, I don’t know why people are so surprised!

“It was one of those where you have got to make a good connection and it nestled nicely into the bottom corner.”

The midfielder added: “We needed the win today.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but we had to earn the right to play. And we did that and thankfully got the victory.

“It’s a long journey home if you don’t get the result you want.

“All you’re thinking of is what went wrong or what you could have done.

“So it will help that journey back home be all the more better, before we come in on Monday morning and start preparing for the match at York next week.”
