JAMES Roberts scored five goals as Oxford United ran out 12-0 winners against an Army under-23 side in a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday.

The 18-year-old striker, who made his senior debut in the 5-1 loss at Cambridge United on Saturday, pushed his claim for more first team action with the display at Aldershot.

Alex Jakubiak bagged a hat-trick, while Jon Meades scored twice.

Alfie Potter, who played an hour after missing the last two games with a groin injury, scored once, along with Sam Humphreys.

United fielded a side of youngsters and experienced players needing game time, with David Hunt and Andy Whing playing 60 minutes.

Their approach to the game heartened Mickey Lewis.

United’s assistant head coach said: “The scoreline is kind of irrelevant, but what you look for is the attitude “The senior pros like David Hunt, Andy Whing, Alfie and Jon Meades were excellent and gave a great example for the younger players to follow.

“We took our chances when they came along and even when the result was beyond doubt, the players kept doing the right things.”
