A CHARITY evening with a difference will take place in York again this year.

The Gurkha curry night has raised thousands of pounds for the North Yorkshire branch of the Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association.

In previous years, hundreds of people have supported the event, which marks the start of the York Food and Drink Festival. This year’s festival runs between September 20 and 29.

Lynn Allington, one of the festival organisers, said: “It’s the return of the Ghurkas, so we’re pleased to welcome them back. It’s always proved to be extremely popular.

“The website has gone live this week, and the excitement is building. We’ve had a lot of interest already, and we’re keeping the music element from last year.

“There’s also a food science theme this year, with talks from the University of York and FERA, along with the usual dinners, wine tastings, demonstrations and massive programme.”

Visitors can enjoy a full Gurkha Bhat, cooked by Army chefs to traditional Gurkha recipes, at the event at the Guildhall on September 23, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £22, or £20 for friends of the festival, and £10 of the ticket price will go to the North Yorkshire branch of the SSAFA. For festival details, or tickets, go to yorkfoodfestival.com
