Wimbledon produced matches and performances to treasure.

Here is a look at five of the most memorable moments of the fortnight.

Left Anderson

When Kevin Anderson slipped over on the baseline during the 49th game of the final set in his six-and-a-half-hour marathon against John Isner, he could have been forgiven for staying down and having a breather. But the South African picked up his racket with his left hand, got to his feet and kept the ball in. He won the point, and moments later he won the second longest match in grand slam history to reach his first Wimbledon final.

Ova-sight costs Konta

The All England Club’s decision to grant Serena Williams a spot among the seeds divided opinion, and nudged one player outside the top 32 despite her ranking. Dominika Cibulkova ensured the ruling backfired on a home player when she knocked out Johanna Konta, the 22nd seed, in round two, a meeting which would not have taken place so early in the tournament had the Slovakian been seeded. Cibulkova, playing like a woman on a mission, went on to reach the quarter-finals.

Serena Kerbed

Angelique Kerber strayed from the script as Serena Williams’ remarkable run to the final, 10 months after giving birth to her daughter and suffering life-threatening complications, did not end with an eighth title. Williams was classy to the end, though, hugging the tearful winner as the enormity of claiming a first Wimbledon title began to sink in for the German, two years after she had lost in the final to the same opponent.

Umpire strikes back

As usual it was impossible to keep your eyes off Nick Kyrgios, the colourful and controversial Australian going through his full repertoire of antics during his run to the third round. One moment stood out, Kyrgios complaining to umpire James Keothavong about a foot-fault call after he had hit the ball during his second-round win over Robin Haase.  Keothavong’s deadpan response? “He can’t call it before you hit it.”

Novak Elastic

Novak Djokovic was staring down the barrel during his epic semi-final against Rafael Nadal when he chased down a drop shot. Spaniard Nadal, sniffing a break point, was poised at the net should his opponent make an unlikely get. Not only did Djokovic retrieve the ball, he strained every sinew to somehow whip it across Nadal and onto the line. “It was one of those moments where time stopped for me,” said the Serbian, who went on to win the title. “All my life, I’ve tried to take care of my body so I can do these kinds of elastic things.”
