BOWLS: Banbury trio star for England

THE Banbury Central trio of Carole Galletly, Stella Amos and Caroline Campion represented England in the British Isles Championships at Les Creuz BC, Jersey.

And they put up a great performance to reach the final, where they went down to a strong Wales outfit.

They opened their campaign against Jersey, and managed to keep their noses in front throughout.

A late fightback from the opposition trio of Sue Dingle, Jean Jones and Gaynor Thomas proved to be in vain as Galletly, Amos and Campion hung on for a hard-fought 19-16 victory.

Things were equally as close in the semi-final against Scotland’s side of Margaret Davidson, Jennifer Forbes and Betty McKenna.

The Banbury bowlers found themselves 10-8 behind after ten ends, but hit back to lead 15-13 after 15 ends, before holding on to claim an 18-15 success.

But they found the going tough against the Wales side of Gill Miles, Jean Hartley and Pam Johns in the final.

A sensational burst from their opponents saw Wales open up a 13-3 advantage after just five ends, and they never looked back.

England could never make any inroads and went down 24-12.
