ALEX Scrivener performed strongly in the opening round of the British Athletics Cross Challenge.

The Banbury Harrier finished fifth in the under 15 girls’ race at Teardrop Lakes in Milton Keynes, which attracted some of the UK’s best cross country runners, with Andy Vernon, who ran for Great Britain at the Rio Olympics this summer, winning the senior men’s race.

In the under 15 girls’ event, Scrivener got into an early breakaway, which proved a good move.

While the top four edged further clear, with Shannon Flockhart from Huntingdonshire winning, the Banbury athlete led the next group.

She crossed the line in 13mins 15secs, 25 seconds behind Flockhart.

The race also served as the second round of the Chiltern League, where Scrivener was the second eligible finisher.

Banbury’s other competitor was Emily Thompson, who came 33rd in the under 17 women’s race, crossing the line in 20mins 9secs.

A minute’s silence was held before the start in memory of Aldershot & Farnham runners Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows, who died earlier in the week when they were hit by a car while out running.
