KEVIN Phillips has spoken of his joy at being appointed manager of Banbury United’s re-formed women’s side.

Phillips, who has extensive experience of men’s and women’s teams over the past ten years, will be assisted by Kath Faulkner.

She spent 18 years playing in senior women’s football, this included eight seasons with Oxford United.

Phillips, who was a member of the under 21 teams at Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke as a player said: “I am proud to have been appointed manager.

“The women’s gamehas changed over the past ten years through the support of the FA and their new ‘Gameplan for Growth’. It’s an exciting time to be part of women’s football.

“Women’s teams at Banbury United have had previous success over the years and my ambition is to put the team on the map once again.

“I also look forward to working with Kath who will be working in a coaching capacity,” added Phillips, who has managed sides in the Banbury District & Lord Jersey League, including re-forming and managing Ashton Villa with whom he is still involved as chairman.

Commenting on the announcement, Banbury United’s vice-chairman Martin Cantrell said, “These are very exciting appointments, and we are confident that they will lead to the club having a vibrant and successful women’s team that is attractive to local players.”

Banbury intend to apply to join the Thames Valley Counties Women’s League for next season, playing matches on a Sunday afternoon.

Home games will be played at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.
