AN OWN GOAL two minutes into second-half stoppage time gave Banbury United a dramatic 2-1 victory at Cambridge City in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division on Monday.

Manager Mike Ford played Ricky Johnson up front and gave a start to recent signing Eddie Odhiambo.

Cambridge took the lead on 32 minutes when a shot from the edge of the area by Joe Carden hit both posts before crossing the line.

But Conor McDonagh fired home an equaliser from 12 yards to make it 1-1 at the break.

Though Banbury had slightly the better of the opening fifteen minutes to the second half, they were unable to create the chances.

Cambridge stepped up the pressure and United had to hang on.

But in time added on for injuries, Mark Bell’s low left-wing cross was sliced into his net by Jack Uttridge to give United victory.

On Saturday, Banbury recovered from conceding an early goal to draw 1-1 in their Southern League match at home to Biggleswade.

They went behind in the fifth minute when Inih Effiong’s cross sailed over Jack Harding into the top corner of the net.

United responded and went close when George Jeacock’s shot was turned round the near post by Biggleswade keeper Ian Brown, who then saved Conor McDonagh’s effort with his legs.

The Puritans, who gave a debut to Eddie Odhiambo, signed from Kidlington were awarded on half-time a penalty which was wwhen visiting defender Russell Short handled. But Ian Brown guessed correctly to save Ricky Johnson’s spot-kick. It looked as though it was not going to be Banbury’s day when Andy Gunn’s header smashed against the bar early in the second half. However, on 55 minutes they were awarded another spot kick when Callum Lewis brought down George Jeacock. And this time Johnson made no mistake firing the ball low into the corner.
