FELIPE Barcelos and Ricky Johnson scored as Banbury United beat leaders Winchester City to go top of the table.

The Puritans are now a point clear in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West, but have played up to four games more than some of their rivals.

Banbury took the lead on 25 minutes when Barcelos slotted home after a quickly taken throw-in allowed Zac McEachran to catch the visitors off guard.

And it was 2-0 on 42 minutes when Johnson scored from close range after good work from Darius Browne.

In the second half, Barcelos was denied by goalkeeper Brendan Norris when he went through one-on-one, before Callum White then shot straight at the keeper.

The chances kept coming as Barcelos latched on to a Johnson ball to go through again, but this time, after rounding Norris, he was denied by a Danny King clearance.

Browne then forced Norris into an other save and Leam Howards had an effort blocked on the line.

Despite the long periods of Banbury pressure, the visitors scored on 79 minutes through Warren Bentley’s header.

And they could have equalised when Jamie Thoroughgood missed a glorious opportunity from five yards late on.

However, Banbury held on to go top.
