Matt Johnson claimed Chipping Norton's club championship after carding a one-under-par 70 in his final round.

Johnson, who has won Chippy's junior title for the past four years, pipped Shaun Kench by one shot, despite a first-round 77 in Saturday's difficult conditions.

Kench managed 74s on both days, while third-placed Danny Hicks shot two 76s for a 152.

Caroline Johnson (no relation to Matt) retained the Beamish Trophy to become ladies' champion for the second year in succession.

Last year her husband Andy won the men's title to complete a family double.

Rounds of 78 and 78 gave the five-handicapper a 156 total.

Sue White was second, carding 86 and 90 for an overall 176, while Anne Johnson, Matt's mum, was third on 178 after rounds of 95 and 83.

In the handicap events, Kench was the men's winner with a nett 144.

Terry Kirk was second on countback ahead of Neil Thornton, both scoring 145.

The ladies' handicap championship was won by Kath Jordan on 149, from Sue White 152 and Jayne Laurie 153.
