KARL Robinson is looking forward to having tough calls to make when it comes to fitting in Oxford United’s attacking talent.

The squad have one final training session at St George’s Park today before the Sky Bet League One campaign kicks off against Barnsley tomorrow.

And the competition for places could be about to get tougher, with winger Ricky Holmes in line to become their ninth summer signing.

Robinson has successfully overhauled his options at the sharp end of his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation during pre-season, but there is not room for all to start at Oakwell.

The United manager welcomes the challenge, though, and knows ultimately the ball is in the players’ court when it comes to working out how they fit in.

“I don’t really care, it’s up to them,” he said.

“It’s no secret here, if you work hard and play well you’ll play.

“I have difficult decisions to make, but that’s part and parcel of my role. I’ll never apologise for having too many good players in the building.

“I’ve never known a fan worry about having too many good players sat on the bench.

“It’s a good place to be.”

Holmes would add an extra layer of complexity to the puzzle, but the loan move had not gone through last night.

Speculation had been growing this week that the 31-year-old would be reunited with Robinson, his manager at Charlton Athletic.

And Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder went public when asked about the link.

He told the Sheffield Star: “Ricky is set to go there until January.

“We’ll see how he goes before taking a decision on whether to bring him back.

“Ricky is a good lad who I know as well as anyone.

“He wants to play first team football and I can’t guarantee that here at the moment.

“It’s a good chance for him to work under a manager whose style suits him and who also knows him.”

If it goes through, it would take United to five loans, the most clubs can name in an 18-man matchday squad.

Robinson is still chasing two additions in a deeper midfield role before the transfer window shuts next Thursday.
