JON Whitney has been impressed with the way Oxford United have responded since the record home league defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Since the 7-0 thrashing at the Kassam Stadium, Pep Clotet’s side have lost just one of their next five games.

The next assignment is a trip to Walsall and manager Whitney admitted United had bounced back well.

He told the Express & Star: “They have turned the drubbing they had against Wigan into three really good results.

“As a manager that is all you can ask from your players.”

Walsall were 2-1 winners at the Kassam Stadium in September, when they had a clear game plan to smother a U’s side looking to pass the ball out from the back.

It is unlikely to work tomorrow, with United changing their style particularly since the Wigan defeat.

Whitney said: “I think they have changed their style a little.

“I went to watch them at Blackpool and they don’t take as many risks at the back.

“They play in open play but they try and play in the right areas now.

“They aren’t as open as they were but they are still a threat.”
