WES Thomas is enjoying playing up front alongside Jon Obika – but admitted he would have had some choice words if his strike partner had not netted against Milton Keynes Dons.

Thomas has spent most of the campaign leading the line on his own, but during the Christmas period Pep Clotet switched to a 4-4-2 system.

Both front men netted in Monday’s 3-1 victory against MK Dons, taking their combined tally for the season to 15.

Thomas has nine of those and the 30-year-old believes they are building a promising partnership.

“It’s nice playing up with Jon,” he said.

“When you get on the ball there’s always an option.

“We’re mixing it up going to feet or going in behind.

“If we’re both doing it that makes it easier for me. It’s good playing with two up there.

“We have a good understanding of what we’re meant to do.

“The more we play together the better the link-up play will be, but we have a good understanding of each other’s game.”

But the double act’s harmony would have been upset on Monday if Obika had failed to make it 3-1.

Thomas, who was screaming for a pass in the middle, joked: “I said to him when he came off ‘if you didn’t score I’m biting your head off’ because I was through.

“But if I was in that position I don’t think I’m passing, so I can’t really complain.”

It was Obika’s second goal in as many games and the striker has also relished the change of system.

He said: “In terms of fitness I feel good and back to my best.

“I feel 4-4-2 gives help to anyone who is up top.

“The midfielders know there are runners in behind. It just gives a new way for centre forwards.”
