OXFORD United are believed to have had an approach turned down for Forest Green Rovers striker Christian Doidge.

The 24-year-old scored 27 goals as the Gloucestershire side won promotion to the Football League for the first time last season.

Despite head coach Michael Appleton’s imminent departure to Leicester City, United are still looking to bring in new players with Celtic centre back Fiacre Kelleher signing a two-year deal yesterday.

Doidge, who netted in Rovers’ 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers in the Vanarama National League play-off final at Wembley, finished second top-scorer in the top tier of non-league football last season.

The Welshman signed a two-year contract at the New Lawn last summer after leaving Dagenham & Redbridge.
