OXFORD United’s players hope their luck will be in tonight after earning the chance for another shot at the Premier League big guns with a terrific Emirates FA Cup win at Rotherham United.

The thrilling 3-2 victory over the Sky Bet Championship strugglers netted a place in the fourth round draw for the second successive season.

While they were underwhelmed to be paired with Blackburn Rovers 12 months ago, losing 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium, United have their fingers crossed for a glamour tie this time.

Ryan Taylor, who scored the opening goal on his return to Rotherham, said: “Hopefully we get a massive tie in the next round.

“As players we want to test ourselves against the best teams and we’ll be hoping for that in the draw.”

United’s success earned £67,500 in prize money, taking their total for the cup run to just over £250,000 when broadcast fees are included.

But that figure would be dwarfed if ball 32 is drawn with one of the country’s top sides at 7pm.

Liam Sercombe, who like Taylor played in the 3-2 win against Swansea City at the same stage last season, was delighted to savour another FA Cup success.

He said: “When I was at Exeter City I had zero cup runs.

“Being here for 18 months, it just seems Oxford love a cup run. It’s great to be a part of.

“We’ll all be watching on Monday night and praying for that big team.”

United felt their cup runs last season played a role in spurring them on to success in the league campaign.

And Taylor, whose goal was only the third of his season, wants to use the Millers result as a springboard – individually and collectively.

He said: “The problem hasn’t been my general play, it’s been my goals.

“I’ve said all along I need to score more and hopefully this is the start.

“We are halfway through the season and we want a final push to get in the play-offs.

“All the lads in there want to play in the Championship and we’ll be pushing to get up there.”

United’s involvement in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round means their scheduled Sky Bet League One game at home to Sheffield United on January 28 will now be rearranged.
