Oxford United will assess Wes Thomas again tomorrow morning to see if the striker is fit to face Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

A calf problem forced the 29-year-old, who has scored three goals this season, off early in last weekend's goalless draw at MK Dons.

United were hopeful earlier this week Thomas would be available to face the Addicks.

But assistant head coach Derek Fazackerley admitted this morning a decision had not been made.

He said: "There’s still a slight doubt about Wes, but we’ll see in the next 24 hours to see whether he’s made enough progress to be available this weekend.

"Kane Hemmings is expected to be fit, which is a bonus for us because if we do lose Wes then he’s the natural replacement in terms of a striker for a striker.

"The size of squad we work with we don’t want too many injuries.

"It’s about managing them and not taking unnecessary risks.

"Hopefully with the things we’ve done we have minimised that and we’ll get them back on the pitch as soon as we possibly can."

Joe Rothwell is also managing an ankle problem after it swelled up following the Dons game, while the latest news Curtis Nelson is the centre back is due back in full training at the end of next week.
