JOHN Lundstram was pleased a broken toe did not cause him too many problems as the midfielder played 90 minutes in Oxford United’s 1-0 win against Cambridge United.
It was the first time the 21-year-old had featured since sustaining the injury during last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Braintree in the Emirates FA Cup.
But Lundstram, who did not need an injection to play, said he was not restricted by the injury.
He said: “It wasn’t too bad, a couple of painkillers before the game did the trick.
“It happened about five minutes into the second half at Braintree, when one of the lads stood on my toe.
“You think the pain will go away after 30 seconds, but it stayed.
“It’s not too serious. I’d like to think it would take more than that to stop me playing.”
Lundstram had to pitch in with the rest of his teammates in the closing stages to protect United’s victory.
Cambridge, who had hung on to stay in the game, finished on top, which the former Everton trainee thought could have been avoided.
He said: “It’s a bit frustrating because we do create chances.
“At 1-0 you’re thinking ‘we’ve played well but they could still get in it’.
“It’s happened a couple of times, but the most important thing was to get the win.
“I didn’t think we had any problems until the last five minutes, when they put us under a bit of pressure, which you’d expect at 1-0."
“We could’ve killed them off with a second and third goal, it wasn’t to be, but we still got the win.”
