Constable keeping close tabs on Oxford United

Banbury Cake: James Constable in action at Didcot on Monday James Constable in action at Didcot on Monday

JAMES Constable will still keep close tabs on Oxford United’s fortunes despite starting the next stage of his career away from the Kassam Stadium, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

The striker, who left the U’s this summer one goal short of equalling their all-time goalscoring record, is pictured above playing for his new team Eastleigh in a pre-season friendly at Didcot Town on Monday.

He netted twice in a 3-0 victory.

The 29-year-old is beginning to get used to life after Oxford, but will always follow United’s progress under a new manager following the departure of former boss Gary Waddock.

“My decision was made early in the summer and the situation there and the fact that I was offered less, meant it wasn’t going to be possible for me to stay,” he said.

“I made the decision to move from the club and I’m still happy with that decision.”

Constable added: “It was a big part of my career.

“I was there for quite a long time and it’s natural to keep in touch with what’s going on.

“It’s not really for me to comment on, but the club have made a decision and new people have come in.

“I had a brief time with Gary and he was a nice guy. He was unfortunate to have lost his job, but a new guy has come in and I’m sure everyone will give him their best.”

I was one of Beano's biggest fans, but he has moved on and I think we all should including the Oxford Mail. How about some more info about the new regime at OUFC far more relevant now.
