UPDATE: James Constable leaves Oxford United and joins Eastleigh

Banbury Cake: James Constable James Constable

James Constable has turned down Oxford United's new contract offer and has joined Eastleigh on a two-year deal.

The iconic striker, who is just one goal short of equalling the all-time goalscoring record, was offered a new contract after his previous deal expired at the end of the season.

But the 29-year-old has rejected the terms.

He told the club's official website: “I have absolutely loved my time at the club and would like to thank everyone for making my time there so special.

"The fans have been unbelievable and I can’t thank them enough for everything.

"The club has been a massive part of my life for the last six years and it’s sad to be leaving but now I am looking forward to the next stage of my career.”

Eastleigh, who last season won promotion into the Conference Premier, are managed by former U's player Richard Hill.

He was delighted to have secured Constable's services.

"I’ve spent the past two-and-a-half weeks speaking to James and telling him all about what we are striving to achieve here," Hill said.

"On the three occasions we’ve met, and during numerous telephone conversations, the subject of money has never been raised.

"In truth, James was keen to stay at Oxford and overhaul the club’s scoring record; a feat that after six years of committed service there he was desperate to achieve.

"He was initially holding out in the hope that Oxford would offer him fair terms to stay and do that.

"Oxford’s loss, though, is definitely our gain."

This lot have no idea, i suspect they offered him reduced money and some other club will be very happy, cant blame Beano at all, i blame the donkey manager and chairman.

Oh dear.
As much as I have been an advocate for better players, forwards included, Beano was a decent option if not a first team starter.
With Beano going, Smalley gone,Connelly returned, and Kitson possibly retiring this leaves GW a mammoth task to recruit forwards alone.....all with little to no money.

Bad times at Oxford.

Good luck to him, he has been a great ambassador for the club. I suspect he was on pretty good money, but you cannot pay top dollar for an average striker return. Quite sure we can get someone in on the same money that Constable was on, who will take some of those many, many chances that are spurned each game.

I agree Dave, he has been a good ambassador for our club and one behind GA in the goals scored is pretty good, most of Beano's have been scored at a lower level than Graham's although it's still a reasonable record. I would say he's probably missed half as many as he has scored tho particularly in recent seasons chasing out wide for the ball then snatching at the fewer chances that have come his way. Good luck Beano wherever you may go now!!

I see that Sam Allardyce has been kept on at West Ham and one of the clauses is that he brings in a dedicated Attacking coach, shame the same clause wasn't in Wilders or Waddocks contracts, we would probably have scored more and achieved better finishes the past however many seasons and probably attracted more fans with flowing football, let's hope that Waddock can introduce a passing game and attract the missing thousands back, the club desperately needs them!

Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Worried about this clubs ambition if our top goalscorer can get a better deal at Eastleigh.

I hope Waddock and the management have a few aces up their sleeve otherwise I fear a relegation coming on.

Keep telling myself it's early days, but need to see some positive transfer dealings to keep the faith.

more bad news . im sorry to have to say it but the arrival of gary waddock just seems to be a disaster for the club. if jc leaves on a free we will have lost out on a hefty transfer fee and will find it hard to get someone as good with our limited finances. im sure that jc wont be short of offers and will quite likely end up at nhampton. many fans will despair for the future and the sale of season tickets will reflect this. personally im gutted by the news that has come from the club this week and cant imagine it could get much worse but i expect it will.

A great trier - thanks to James - many should have followed his lead in terms of commitment . He would have struggled again next season - max 12 League goals (if he played regularly as main striker ). He should do well at the lower level. Now to sign someone who will notch 20 (or more) at our level .Let the usual thumbs down tally soar! . Best wishes, James.

Commitment is two way Beano showed it the club did not but they expect it from the fans I for on will not return unless they improve this squad

Eastleigh gain is our loss thanks Beano for all you commitment its a pity this club did not reciprocate

It's quite worrying that one of our most prolific and loyal strikers is lured away from the club to a newly promoted conference team! I know we have no money but surely we can offer him a better deal than what Eastleigh can?

Seeing as we've kept most of the squad from last year, we can't have much scope to sign players, well ones that are half decent anyway! I'm not convinced about Waddock, Lenegan or the squad so next season could be horrendous! Would anyone take mid table now?

What a sad reflection on the club when Beano joins a Conference team.
I have absolutely no faith in the management and Chairman and don't know what they are doing to our club.
Unless Waddock gets in players very soon and certainly goalscorers we will be struggling against relegation next season.
Lenegan seems obsessed with concentrating on the youth.
They are not good enough Lenegan- most of them are lightweight and we need proven league players.

They are not good enough Lenegan- most of them are lightweight and we need proven league players. learned

Well done Gary Waddock, new manager, disgusted at the players he inherited promises that heads will roll. Answer: release our two top scorers and our most skillful player sean Rigg.
As a lifelong fan since we were in the Southern League and a season ticket holder throughout the 60's I was privileged to watch the Atkinson brothers on a regular basis, Graham was very skillful and but for a lack of effort would have scored many more goals.
Due to self imposed exile in West yorkshire, I now only see the U's when they play in this area and fully expect to see them play my local team Halifax in the Conference in 2 years time

Blame Waddock all you want, but he is not the root of the problem - he is but a symptom of deep underlying problems with OUFC.

Unless this club can find some new owners to address the horrendous financial position, inject some energy / cash along with resolving the ground ownership issue (to finally move on from Mr Kassam to sucking the life out of the club) - then I truly believe OUFC are in very real danger of dropping out of the league again and disappearing down through the conference.

I realise this is not a positive view and people will not like it, and whether you/we as football fans rate like or dislike certain managers and player, which we can all debate all day long as that the great thing about footballl - the fact is the club cannot 'attract or retain talent'.

Thats the reality of the situation

I'm right behind Waddock with my support as he can only do what he can with very limited support. At least he accepted the job whereas other turned it down.

I do not understand this from both parties. Regardless of missed chances he has still been our top scorer for the past 6 seasons. Every striker that he has been put up against he has beaten from within the club. If he had scored maybe another 4 goals for each of our previous 4 league campaigns then I am certain he would have had a long term deal and been able to call the shots.

From the clubs point of view this is shameful. JC give to Oxford something very rare in this age - LOYALTY and got none of it back. With forward coaching, I think that JC could have become that 20 goal guy we were after, someone to teach a bit of finesse. I said this 3 years ago, but the owners/management kept faith with the coaching skills of a defensive midfielder, 2 defenders and a keeper! No balance at all.

James, I know that it has never been about the money, but I feel that you could have stayed in the league and got some glory, after living through the pain of getting out of the conference once. I think it will be very hard to return, although not impossible.

I wish you all the best and thank you.

However, we must now move on. I think we should push the boat out a little bit and get Matt Tubbs in. I understand we were close to signing him some time ago, so maybe now is the time to get the man who can score 20+ goals per season. That can be the difference between 8th place and auto promotion!

Yep, I will take mid table based on what's happened since Waddock arrived. It's shocking that Eastleigh can offer him 50% more than us, if the guys that quote 50% are correct that is, on their gates compared to ours. What has happened with Constable proves just how silly the club was to turn down Bristol Robers generous offer only to lose him for nowt now. I honestly think mid table will be difficult to achieve on present happenings and fervently hope we don't end up in a relegation dogfight. Next season is daunting, let's hope good things happen between now and then!

Every player gets to the stage where it's time to 'move on' - 'Beano's' has come a season or two late, as was wilders.
He's been a good player and while not spectacular- you could never question his commitment.
I'm waiting to see who comes in before coming to any conclusions about letting JC go.
IF the U's make some solid signings that show ambition and intent- Beano will soon be forgotten, it happens. Should however, the U's sign yet more journey men or crocks- I will fear for the Club's future.
Chairmen Lenagan has some ground to make up imo- after getting some big decision so wrong- eg the time he spent over the appointment of Mr Waddock, and going on a 'Jolly' at a vital time.

How embarrassing that a non league club has more ambition than leneghan has for Oxford United. Had heard from within the club that Beano's offer was more a PR exercise to appease the fans - how patronising is Leneghan?!?

Beano always gave 100%,was leading goal scorer for the last 6 seasons, so close to breaking the all time goal scoring record and was desperate to stay at the club - how bad that offer must have been for him to turn it down.

Good luck Beano - thanks for all the great memories - Wembley and those goals against that lot dowm the A420 to name but a few. I can only apologise for the disgraceful way you have been treated by the club.

Note to leneghan - not a good day to send out my season ticket renewal. Good luck in the lower league Beano and hope it works out. In reality he was never going to be a 20 goal a season striker in this division as it proved this year. His commitment was superb but his misses in front of goal are one of the reasons we are in L2 still. We need at least 2 decent strikers to survive. The Liverpool system works - let in 4 but score 5 and the crowds will return. If you don't do something soon IL the crowds will dwindle.

Why I feel JC has taken a backward step is that he has dropped a division yet Smalley has signed for Plymouth! The more I think of it the more I feel JC never intended to sign a new deal with us for next season.

OK - back to 16 for (understandably) unambitious and long suffering United fans . James missed shedloads of chances - one who would convert at least 5 more of them (ideally 10) . Depressing that others (not you ) are used to us looking up at the Scunthorpes , Fleetwoods and Rochdales of this world. So depressing - about 15 plus years of poor football both by United and by most of our opponents. Dagenham and Wycombe here we come!

Why shoud Leneghan, or anybody else have to reach into their pockets, the club is a business and as such should support itself, not have to relyon individuals to spend their personal wealth. The club has to cut it's cloth to match it's means.

All these people that say Oxford is a big club and should act like it should get a reality check, we are not a big club and certainly don't have a big budget; yes we have the catchment and potential to be a big club but, in general, attendances have never been outstanding without the "one-off" glory hunts for the big days. Without other sources of revenue the club will never progress on attendance income alone.

At the end of the day I would rather we stood still for a bit and the club survived because by spending money we don't have will only end up in one result and that is really unthinkable.

Greengo

Constable leaving isn't the problem, it's his choice and good luck to him he has been a terrific signing for us but we all move on. What really concerns me is that a conference club with tiny support can woo a decent striker. We literally have zero ambition and I really have no idea what lenagan wants to do with the club. He seems to have lost interest. Something has to happen before August or it will be a long hard season.
