Oxford United offer Tom Newey a new deal

Banbury Cake: Tom Newey Tom Newey

Tom Newey has been offered a new deal by Oxford United.

The left back was not able to attend meetings held with the club's out-of-contract players yesterday, but U's head coach Gary Waddock informed the former Bury, Rotherham and Scunthorpe defender this afternoon that he was part of his plans.

Waddock yesterday offered a new deal to leading scorer James Constable, activated a clause in skipper Jake Wright's contract to keep him at the Kassam Stadium for another year, but released Sean Rigg, Scott Davies and Deane Smalley.

Newey and Constable must now decide if they will accept the offers put to them.

Why is Waddock resigning most of the same players that have let the club and especially the fans down in the last third of the year. This makes no sense to me at all. We have the best goalkeeper in the division but most of the other players are good conference players. I can understand Constable being a squad player as well as resigning some of the younger players. However Waddock has hardly made any radical changes it is more pruning than the major changes that were needed or he said that was required. It will be interesting whether the chairman backs him with anything more than free transfer players. This guy does not inspire confidence.

So we keep 2 of the worst full backs we have had for years.
Quite honestly I expected a bigger cull than has taken place and doesn't really leave much room for new players coming in ??

The deserved cull of out of contract players has been gentle in the extreme given the 2nd half season collapse.

I can't quite understand why and it does not bode well. In effect next season will start with a similar 11 that ended the season in such an appalling fashion.

Rigg, Smalley, Davies, Williams, Wroe, Connolly are gone. Add to this the fact that I think there will be a couple of in contract players that will be transfer listed, possibly Raynes and Rose.

That would make 8 new players to come in. I think anymore would be asking for trouble. Remember that even though we capitulated, we still finished 8th, so we can't be too far away.

Strange decision to say the least. Maybe GW's hands are tied by budget restraints, but this decision is arguably the strangest of the lot. No guarantee Newey will stay though, hopefully the terms offered are so bad Newey signs somewhere else. £50 a week would be too much.

If I had said that I would be castigated and given an enormous amount of thumbs down. I hope by agreeing with you I don't get you tarred with the same brush. And while I am on my soap box, what do OU fans feel about Greg Dykes commissions plan to take the top half of the Conference and the Premier Leagues B teams and create a League 3. In my opinion it would take the best of the young players from clubs like OU and basically undermine the Football League. Thus causing clubs like ours problems for future development. Opinions please!

I feel the uncertainty many fans have in Waddock is uncalled for. Granted, everyone has the right to an opinion but there comes a time when the club you truly love and support could do with your love and support rather than prematurely calling for the resignation of a manger who has been in the job for such a small amount of time (not directed at you).
I am fully aware we have won once since he has been here. But look at the situation when he arrived - it was far from ideal and the situation now is far from ideal what with not owning and sharing the stadium. Players who appear to leave their boots at home and a chairman who is continuously at the blame for leaving the managerial position too long.

But yes you're right, without the players we aren't going up. But there are 23 other teams with the same mentality, we have no divine right to go up. At times we may not deserve to go up and we may never go up in my life time. But the one man capable of taking us up through signing decent players requires yours and everyone else's confidence for just a season.

Much negativity, such wow.

When Waddock was introduced by Lenagan, he said some fans would be rather underwhelmed. The same must be said for the ''retained and offered new contract list''. To many, Newey and Hunt were a poorer pair of fullbacks than Davies & Batt. So much for the promise of a more attacking squad. Seems like this week has worse news that the last two or three. Bring on the summer holidays, get me away from all this gloom.

Newey may not have been offered an improved contract, so it is not certain he will stay (like most he wouldn't be a loss). Of the 6 players gone (including the loan players) only Williams will be missed. Hopefully 2 or 3 of the under contract players will be off loaded. So 8 or 9 new faces to come in on the playing side plus a change in the coaching staff will make for a improved season, I hope.
The first signings will be important to giving us all a lift, no kids seasoned pros. Ideal player for a starter Craig Westcarr 17 goals for Walsall last season and released by them.

I think that many of you will be underwhelmed by the lack of new faces. Remember that IL wants to bring through home grown players and GW was employed to 'buy into' this strategy. A lot will depend on JC and TN accepting their new contracts if they do then I suspect only one or two new faces will come in. But all is not doom and gloom, hopefully we will get a new 'deputy head coach' in Martin Kuhl.
