JOSH Oliver scored four times as Oxford City Stars made the perfect start to their title defence with a 12-1 win over Basingstoke Buffalo.

There were seven other players on the scoresheet in a dominant display at Oxford Ice Rink.

The hosts were quickly into their stride, with Josh Oliver opening the scoring in the seventh minute, despite Darren Elliott serving a penalty.

After completing his time in the bin, Elliott returned to the ice and promptly doubled the lead from close range.

Alan Green and Nick Oliver also struck before the end of the first period to put the Stars firmly in charge.

Buffalo netminder Steven Grout excelled in the second frame as the Stars onslaught continued.

He faced 28 shots in the 20-minute spell, but only Josh Oliver could find a way through, helping himself to three more as the lead stretched to 7-0.

Elliott, who also finished with three assists, added his second of the night early in the final period.

Jacob Smith, Joe Edwards and Josh Florey took the advantage into double figures.

They came within three minutes of a shut-out, but Gregory Martin claimed a late consolation for Basingstoke.

The Stars had the final say, though, ringing up a dozen when Joe Oliver netted ten seconds before the end.

It rounded off a hugely encouraging night for the defending champions.

On Sunday, they visit Chelmsford Warriors, who began with a 4-3 win over Bristol Pitbulls.
