Oxford United winger inspired by Lambert's career path
SEAN Rigg believes Rickie Lambert’s goalscoring debut for England shows everyone in the lower reaches of the Football League what can be achieved.
The Oxford United winger began his career alongside Lambert at Bristol Rovers.
A long apprenticeship in the lower leagues led to Lambert moving from Rovers to Southampton and the striker earned an international call-up aged 31, following 15 goals in his first Premier League season.
Rigg was watching on TV as Lambert came off the bench and scored less than three minutes into his England career with what proved to be the winner against Scotland at Wembley.
“That’s my claim to fame now,” he joked.
“I played up top with him for a couple of years, he was outstanding even then and used to bang in ridiculous goals.
“I was a young lad coming through, but he was good to me.
“Part of me was gobsmacked to see him come on and score, although I knew he was good enough.
“ I was chuffed for him, what else could you wish for? It was a perfect debut.
“It just goes to show that anything’s possible if you keep your head down and you have confidence in your own ability.
“He always had a lot of self belief and never held back.
“You just never know what might happen, so you have to keep going and hope for that break.”
Rigg has formed part of an impressive attacking quartet for United so far this season.
The 24-year-old is enjoying a role which allows freedom to drift in from the left flank and join in with Alfie Potter, Deane Smalley and Dave Kitson.
The unit tore Portsmouth apart to set up a 4-1 win in the last away game and Rigg wants more of the same at Torquay tomorrow.
He said: “It’s really good, me and Alfie can stay wide and get at people, or come inside.
“We link up well with the guys in the middle and it’s worked well so far.
“Torquay will be tough, they didn’t have a great season last year so will want to get away to a good start.
“But we’re confident and we’ll be ready for it.”
