Davies keen to repay Oxford United faith by earning contract

SCOTT Davies wants to do all he can in the last ten games of the season to earn a permanent contract at Oxford United this summer.

The 24-year-old signed non-contract terms last week and is pushing for a first start at Torquay United tomorrow after making substitute appearances in the U’s last two games.

A return to action has come as a relief for Davies, who made just one first-team appearance this season before being released by Crawley Town in December.

He came close to signing for Stevenage, but after the move hit the buffers he is now focused on staying at United beyond the end of April.

He said: “I’d love to be here next season.

“I’ve spoken to other clubs, but none of them really fit the criteria, apart from this one.

“I’m a local-ish lad from just down the road in Aylesbury and it’s a club I think can do well next season, if they don’t achieve what they want this season.

“I have been in touch with a few people over the last five or six weeks since I’ve not been at a club.

“I was at Stevenage for a few weeks and the move fell through there.

“It was unfortunate, but now I’m at a club that’s just as big, if not bigger, so it’s worked out quite well for me and I’m delighted to be here.”

It was a case of third time lucky for Chris Wilder, who has had two approaches turned down in the past.

Davies opted for Crawley when he was released by Reading in 2011 and the U’s boss had another unsuccessful bid during the midfielder’s stay in Sussex.

But the past interest played a role in the decision this time.

He said: “Without a doubt, I spoke to the manager and he showed a bit of belief in me.

“He’s asked about me in the past and it’s nice to have a manager who rates you.”
