United to face hard labour

Oxford United boss Darren Patterson ordered his players in today for extra training after the dismal goalless draw against Woking at the Kassam Stadium.

The U's were second best to the Blue Square Premier's bottom team yesterday, and only escaped with a draw thanks to some fine saves from goalkeeper Jake Cole.

It has been a bad start to the season for United, with successive away defeats, players getting sent off through indiscipline, and a surprise home defeat by Weymouth.

Only smashing six goals against Eastbourne has provided fans with any hope.

But after yesterday's sterile affair, in which they struggled to create chances or excite the crowd in any shape or form, that seemed a distant memory.

Patterson said he was at a loss to understand why his players should perform like that, especially when they had had more rest and recovery time since their last game - at Wrexham last Thursday - than Woking, who played at the weekend.

"We're in tomorrow morning," United's manager said straight after the match.

"I can't accept flat performances like that. It's the nature of the performance, that's why we're in.

"We can't let that go, and we've got to make sure we nip it in the bud very quickly.

"It was as flat as a pancake and we can't be like that. We're at home, we haven't won many games here, fans still came out in their numbers to support us today and that wasn't enough - for them or for me."

Patterson conceded: "It was pretty awful from start to finish, as bad a performance as I can remember. Where it came from, I don't know.

"Too many people looked leggy, one-paced, and for some reason or other, the options for the man in possession of the ball were awful.

"We went to just punting it, straight, and losing possession because when we were passing it there was no movement.

"Why we resorted to that, I have no idea, because we don't do that, we don't play like that and we don't train like that. I'm a bit perturbed why.

"I can't think of any positives out of the game other than Jamie Guy coming back, Chris Willmott getting 90 minutes, and the fact that it was our first clean sheet."

He added: "It's the first time since I've been manager that I've ordered them back in next morning, but we need to get in and work hard on it.

"Obviously Mickey (Lewis, his assistant) will have a look at the system, have a look at the clientele and see what we've got."

UNITED are back in action on Saturday when they visit Ebbsfleet United.

Come on DP we need OUFC to win games otherwise we will slide into the darkness of oblivion. I thought we were aiming for promotion but obviously we are just wanting a mid table finish like last season....yawn....co

It would take an astonishing transformation already for this team to be challenging for the title, even the play-offs look optimistic at the moment.

What an awful performance - it seems Patterson, Mickey Lewis and captain Adam Murray just don't seem able to inspire the players at all which is very worrying. Everything's gone totally flat just a couple of weeks into the season. Attendances are going to tumble at this rate and it will become a downward spiral.

I would take the captaincy off Murray for starters.

The photo accompanying this story says it all. Glum, inward-looking Patterson slumping in failure set against a background of empty seats. The thin sprinkling of groaning Yellows fans hunched in disappointment, a sad youngster in the foreground being consoled by his father after he has been pitifully let down yet again by his heroes.

All this before the end of August. Never did I imagine that the Us would get off to such a wretched start with what has been in all honesty a comparatively easy programme of opening fixtures.

It appears you have 'Lost the changing room' Mr Patterson, you need to hold an emergency meeting with all the players and thrash it out.
Otherwise on current 'form' you will have the dubious distinction of being manager of the Club as it goes out of business.

FFS, come on -you cannot expect to hold on to the support for much longer..

Darren was Quoted as saying we dont play like that, YES they do Darren, thats why the results are so poor and performances are near shambolic. Darren also said we performed well against Wrexham, he really does need to come and sit in the seat i sat in because i didnt see an awful lot to get thrilled about, true there was some glimmers from Jake Cole young Deering but too many players looked like square pegs in round holes, Day, Quinn and Murray to mention a few, Murray hasnt looked the same since given the Captaincy and the departure of Jamie Hand. And get this Darren, extra practice is only worthwhile if you take a BALL along, they look as if they never practice with one and when the Referee brings one on at the start of a match some look shocked. Buck up for heavens sake!

No more Mr Nice Guy Darren Patterson
You need to find your Dark Side real quick

Your really need to show the players who is boss, you need to earn the players respect so that they can look up to you instead of just laughing at what you tell them you want them to do.

Can it get any worse? How Day is still at the club is a mystery. Murray as captain and player was non existant. Patto looks lost and unable to change a game - he kept calling the young players to get ready in the last two home games and then changed his mind. Get a new manager now before we disappear as a club!!

What's really worrying is that Nick Merry is only a paper chairman - he has no money personally. The sight of him and Jim Smith in a huddle at Wrexham was pathetic and I do not think either of them has a clue as to what to do next. Remember DP was not an interviewed and advertised for replacement for Smith - he was waiting in the corridor!. In fact OUFC have not advertised for a manager for years; all of Kassam's appointments were all 'arranged' on the QT. With people like Martin Allen and Jimmy Quinn out of a job how much more of Patterson's excuses/whinges can we take?

a football club that just cant ever get it right
from a blooming club in the leagues to non league oblivion
why hasnt any one saved oufc from disaster?

Could the problem be all the ON loan players that Oxford have, because in the back of their minds they still have their parent club to fall back on, so they don't really care about the games outcome, they don't have the same loyalty and commitment as a signed, contracted Oxford player, just a thought !!!

The father should be prosecuted immediatly for child cruelty!

As re-hab both should attend saturdays at Swindon to watch some proper football.

What a bunch of doom and gloom merchants you all are! True, the start has been awful and Woking was poor beyond words, but we are not out of August yet! Darren Patterson is a top class Manager - I have absolutely no doubt he will get it right. Pre-season we looked good and he was the Manager then! The players have got us into this. James Clarks idiotic tackle at Barrow, Luke Foster sent off at Wrexham and a total lack of anything at home to Woking. It's all put more pressure on the players. Woking was dreadful, but add Turley (for his organisational skills), Foster, Trainer and a fully fit Jamie Guy and we would be a very different side. I do agree that Adam Murray looks weighed down with the extra responsibility of the captains armband. Keep the faith, we're going up this season!

Top class manager where the hell is the evidence? If he was a top class manager do you think he would be the manager of Oxford United?

All Managers have to start somewhere. I truly believe he will be one of the best. Only time will tell, so neither of us can be sure either way. Let's just all try to be positive and at least give him a chance. If we are not in the top six by Christmas, then start having a moan - not in August!

I do see your point.

What I do want to avoid tho is what happened last season where in my opinion we gave Jim too much time and the season was virtually over as in terms of getting promotion. We cannot afford to write off another season. To me Darren hasn't give me any glimmers of hope to make me think things will get better I can only see things getting a whole lot worse really.

It would be a brave decision by Merry to sack Darren early on but I think it will be the right one and whats the phrase fortune favours the brave.

I agree in parts to what you both have said , we need definately to let him gel this "new" team together a bit more until christmas, there have been three to four new players in each game and they need a little more time.
And to be fair Simon , I specifically remember you saying at the end of pre season, that you were "once a Patto doubter, but that now you can see and feel confident that he is doing a good job" or something to that effect? So saying Darren has not given you any glimmer of hope....isn't really true is it?
