Sam Deering's performances when coming on as a substitute are pushing him closer to a first-team start.

The teenager, who has spent time at both Chelsea and Arsenal as a youngster, has looked lively every time he has come off the bench for the U's.

He gave his best performance so far at Wrexham on Thursday evening when he was thrown on for the last 18 minutes in the 2-0 defeat.

And manager Darren Patterson admits Deering is now knocking on the door of a starting place.

"The boy is small, but that kid's going to be a player," said the U's boss.

"He has got a heart as big as a stadium.

"He wants the ball, can play left side, right side, in the hole, and his composure is superb.

"Although he's only a small lad, he is probably the one youngster at the moment who is both physically and mentally able to handle the pressure for us.

"He's definitely knocking on the door."

He looked good in the 18 minutes he was on, ran with ball which is something no one else did, not even Yemi altho i still think its his strength to run with it into the box, remember what happened when he did at Burton 2 seasons ago?. But back to Deering he looks a player who could really do things for us, pity he isnt a foot taller.

Great management! Why not tell the rest of the youth they're not good enough. From what I've seen you've got some great young players coming through - give them some encouragement. Chelsea trial failed, Arsenal trial failed.

The senior players can't handle the pressure so really Darren you should say only player.
