Fitting day for torch to be put on display

PARALYMPIC torchbearers from Oxfordshire lit the way towards the 2012 Games yesterday as they carried the torch to London. And to boost the Olympic spirit in Oxfordshire even further, the Oxford Museum has a new exhibit – a golden Olympic torch.

School sports development officer Margaret Stevens, 49 – pictured left with Antonia Harland-Lang of the Town Hall gallery – carried the torch along Cowley Road when it came to Oxford in July and has lent it to the museum. She said: “I wanted as many people as possible to be able to see it.”

The Paralympics opening ceremony took place last night after the Paralympic Flame was carried from Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire to the Olympic Stadium.

Dave Bracher, 44, from Didcot, carried the torch in Harrow at around 5am. He said: “It was fantastic to be part of the relay.” Other torchbearers included Luke Biggs, 15, from Abingdon who spent the first six months of his life in hospital after being born with Total Hirschsprungs disease, and Ann Gresswell, from Wytham, who has spent decades helping disabled swimmers.
