CHILTERN Railways is the one of the country's leading train operators according this year's Rail Passenger Survey.

The train operator was voted the top provider of services in Oxfordshire, with 91 per cent of passengers saying they were satisfied with their travel experience.

The figures, released yesterday by consumer watchdog Transport Focus, saw Chiltern ranked fourth in the country for overall experience.

Chiltern Railways managing director Dave Penney said: "We are committed to providing a high quality service for our passengers.

"As managing director, my aim is to deliver a punctual and reliable service for our customers whilst continuing to improve the customer experience."

The operator also rated 49 per cent for value for money, 87 per cent for reliability and punctuality and 90 per cent for satisfaction with the station.

Last year Chiltern Railways opened Oxford Parkway station, the first new station in a major British city for more than a century.

Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith said from a national perspective passengers were in need of more reliable services.

He said: "Many passengers are feeling the strain.

"As passenger numbers rise and welcome investment is put in place some passengers are having a difficult time with delays and cancellations making journeys stressful.

"Simply getting on a train has become a struggle for some."

Great Western Railway was rated 84 per cent for overall satisfaction.

Yesterday, the company also revealed one of the new Hitachi electric trains which will come into service in 2017.

The train travelled from Reading to London Paddington to mark 175 years of trains travelling on the Great Western Line.
