THE speed limit on a stretch of the A34 will be cut to 50mph for six months to allow drainage work to be carried out.

The reduction in speed between the junction with the A4185 at Chilton and the A4130 at Milton will come into effect on Monday, December 1 when work starts designed to reduce incidents of flooding.

The work will include replacement of filter drains, pipes and gully connections as well as cleaning and clearing of the drainage network and ditches.

Highways Agency bosses said the 50mph speed limit would be in effect 24 hours a day and there would be occasional overnight closures of the road.

Highways Agency service deliver manager Guy Watts said: “This work will provide smoother and safer journeys for users of the A34 in this part of Oxfordshire.

“Road users will benefit from a section more resistant to flooding and therefore less likely to impact upon journeys.”

It comes just days after a report suggested adding an extra lane to the road to cut congestion.

Work is currently under way at Kennington and Hinksey Hill to create a roundabout which has seen the A423 reduced to one lane.
