Our deputy picture editor Richard Cave takes his pick of the week’s best photographs and tells us why he reckons they make the grade

Sometimes the photographer is in the right place at the right time, with a camera around his neck. True, everyone has a camera on their phone now, but that doesn’t necessarily make them photographers. Disappointed that his ‘owl day’ picture had fallen flat in town, Mark Hemsworth found that round the next corner Hillary and Bill Clinton appeared, above, and suddenly, who cares about the owls pic anyway?

Oxford Mail:

I’ve seen enough footage of the resulting retribution when TV presenters have likened wrestling to pantomime, so I’m saying nothing. Great pictures by Damian Halliwell of the bout between Little Legs (Mark Sealey) and TagOri at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre last weekend

Oxford Mail:

Let’s get this straight: no one around here asked ‘where’s Wally?’ Damian Halliwell was photographing the Town and Gown run, the orange represents the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, for which the event raises funds, so it was absolutely right that Damian should point his camera in that direction for a ‘back at ya’ moment from the man in the splendid hat

Oxford Mail:

Great pic, great story. When the Oxfordshire Blue Plaque group couldn’t create a memorial for Bletchley Park codebreaker, John Herivel, his daughter designed one herself. Damian Halliwell did a fine job of capturing the official unveiling – with the very happy Susan Herivel

Oxford Mail:

David Fleming’s fine shot of Wittenham keeper Callum Oakey is all superhero like, as he doesn’t quite get his hands to the ball. Luckily, it hits the bar, bouncing down and then out. Dorchester were plating Long Wittenham Athletic

Oxford Mail:

Who’s coolest – Banksy or your nan? I reckon it’s your nan if she can yarn-bomb like these guys. The gentle folk of Thrupp knit speed cameras and speed-calming related street furniture to highlight traffic problems in their village.

Oxford Mail:

A great picture by David Fleming Bobby Ratcliffe, 10, is down to the final 25 in auditions to play Michael in the London production of Billy Elliot. Jon Lewis just made some nice, sensitive low-key portraits of him with his tap shoes
