A total of 73 thefts at beauty spots in the Faringdon area took place over the course of 2015, Thames Vallley Police has revealed.

Valuables left in cars by people visiting areas of natural beauty and nature reserves are routinely stolen by opportunists and the force has reminded residents to always keep them with them when out and about over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Crime prevention posters have been put up in public spaces and officers are working with the National Trust to cut down foliage around the White Horse Hill picnic picnic area so that the car park is less secluded.

Three offenders were arrested and prosecuted in January, which police said has led to a slight reduction in this type of crime around Faringdon.

PC Robert Maris, of Faringdon Neighbourhood Team, said: “Not leaving bags, sat navs or other valuables in your car may sound quite obvious, but there have been occasions when offenders have watched victims hide their valuables inside their car and have then forced entry to the vehicle moments later. We would urge the public to take their property with them, to be vigilant and to report suspicious activity to us by calling 101.

“I think the public would be surprised about just how much property was recovered from the area last year. By working with our partners and the public, we can significantly reduce this type of offending whilst continuing to enjoy the beauty spot locations.”
