PARENTS from a children’s centre in David Cameron’s constituency will march through the town on Saturday to protest against plans to close it.

Between 200 and 300 mums and dads who have used the Ace Children’s Centre in Chipping Norton will gather to voice their concerns over potential cuts by Oxfordshire County Council to save more than £6m.

Campaigners will meet outside the centre on Burford Road at about 9.45am before marching to the town centre.

Oxford Mail:

Organiser Laetisia Carter, 34, said the centre is well used and important to the community because of its rural surroundings.

Mrs Carter, who has a nine-month old daughter, takes her son Ruben, three. She said expert staff are vital to the service.

She added: “It’s not as if the centre is not being used. It’s used all the time and is a great service to the community.

“It’s a place where people can go if they are in real crisis. You build a real relationship with the staff and they are so supportive.

“They also run courses to get people back into work. It’s just fantastic.”

Mrs Carter added that a volunteer service would not have the same effect as the current staff are trained to deal with different scenarios.

Oxfordshire County Council head of children's services said this week that his council was forced to shut children's centres in order to pay for child protection services.

Jill Huish, leader of campaign group Save Oxfordshire’s Children’s Centres, said she would continue to “rattle cages” to prevent the cuts from being enforced.

She added: “We will be keeping up the pressure and will continue to spread the word.”

Earlier this month, the county council finally agreed proposals to axe subsidies to all 118 bus services which it had helped fund across the county.
