CONCERNS have been raised that CCTV camera operations could be moved out of the Vale into the neighbouring county of Bridgend.

The Penarth Times understands a report could be submitted to the Vale Council’s cabinet members on Monday (June 17) recommending a relocation of the current Barry CCTV system to the Bridgend Control Room. The Vale has more than 35 cameras trained on the area – aimed at deterring crime and ensuring public’ safety. Dedicated staff man the unit using built-up knowledge to aid the effectiveness of the operation.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It seems utterly ludicrous to shut such a successful operation down and move to another county.

“The safety of our community is far more important than any money-saving initiative.”

Vale MP Alun Cairns said he was “appalled” to hear that the Vale Council is looking to move the Barry CCTV system to the Bridgend Control Room. He said: “Surely, they can't act to move jobs out of Barry?

“Having dealt with the CCTV system and team in Barry in the past I’m only too aware of the collective local knowledge and expertise needed to help keep the crime rate down and residents and businesses safe in communities across Barry.

“For the Council cabinet to even consider re-locating such an essential service out of the largest town in Wales, let alone out of the local authority is outrageous.

“I have written to the Leader of the Council to note my strong objection to such a proposal and will be doing all I can to make sure that the proposals are rejected.”
