A man has died following a flat fire in Banbury today.

Fire crews were called to a blaze in a basement flat in West Street at about 10.30am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the flat. However, the victim later died.

Police and fire crews are carrying out an investigation into the incident.

Police said they were treating the death as unexplained.

Det Insp Steve Duffy said: “At this stage the death is not believed to be suspicious. Together with the fire service we are conducting enquiries into how this has happened.”

Police have sealed off the area while a forensic examination is carried out.
