A SOCIAL club that has been serving the west Oxfordshire community for the past 50 years is getting ready to celebrate its anniversary this weekend.
Witney’s Windrush Club was founded in a small building in Mill Street in 1949, before it later moved to its current home, in High Street.
With about 900 members on its books, the club is holding a special celebration on Saturday night to mark the 50-year milestone.
Club secretary, Gerry Hollerbach, who has been a member for the past ten years, said everyone was looking forward to the event.
He added: “When the club was first set up, it was primarily for businessmen in the town.
“Over the years, the club has undergone a couple of revamps, during the last one we spent £160,000 bringing it up to date.
“Before it was associated more with an older generation, but we have worked hard over the last few years to get in a good mix of younger people.
“So we are all really looking forward to having a good time on Saturday to celebrate.”
Saturday night’s event will be open to members only, however, the club is normally open for non-members to come in to see what it has to offer.
Mr Hollerbach added: “We always welcome new faces and new members to keep the club going for another 50 years.”
