A bakery on the edge of Oxford has been named one of the best in Britain.

Proof Social Bakehouse, an open-plan cafe at Sandford Lane Industrial Estate in Kennington, has made the Telegraph's list of bakeries worth queuing up for.

The café is in full view of the working bakehouse which is run by head baker Paul Dickinson who has more than 10 years of experience.

The bakery was opened in 2022 by Tap Social Movement, which runs the Taproom in Botley and The White House in Abingdon Road.

Founded in 2016, Tap Social Movement is a social enterprise brewery and hospitality organisation that provides paid training and employment to people in prison.

According to its website, the organisation has worked with more than 40 ex-offenders on site offering at least 85,000 hours of paid employment.

A statement on the website said: "Proof Social Bakehouse is an artisan wholesale bakery and cafe in Oxford that creates a range of sourdough breads, pastries, and more.

"We’re part of Tap Social Movement, a social enterprise offering paid training and employment to people currently serving and recently released from prison sentences."

Milly Kenny-Ryder, writing for the Telegraph, said: “The fruit Danishes are bestsellers, but Proof also caters generously for vegans with an impressive spread of dairy-free options.

“The baristas pour a great flat white with Oxford’s best-loved Missing Bean coffee, while the pantry area sells a range of artisan items from the bakery’s favourite suppliers.”

The café is open Thursday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm.
