A school in Oxford which previously came under fire from parents for staff shortages is looking for a new deputy headteacher.

Rose Hill Primary School is looking to fill the position after it was criticised last summer due to one of its classes being taught by two teaching assistants, one of whom usually worked as a cleaner.

The classes' permanent teacher left at Christmas in 2022 but no replacement was found before the summer term in 2023.

A spokesperson for the River Learning Trust said at the time: “Teacher recruitment is a huge issue across the country. It is particularly problematic in areas where property prices are high and where people are often priced out of the housing market.

"As a trust, we work hard to support our schools to fill vacancies. But this is a bigger issue than one school one trust or one part of the country."

Last summer, parent Sammie Baird said: “I’m really tempted to leave work and turn around and go back and pick her up.

“The children were told in December the teacher was leaving but there’s still not a permanent teacher.

“There’s also not a lot of communication."

Another parent raised concerns about the impact the teacher shortage was having on her child’s development.
