More than 100 pupils at a school near Bicester have been building homes for an endangered species.

Heyford Park School pupils have been crafting bird boxes for swifts.

The 138 youngsters from years one and six teamed up with Dorchester Living and artist Kerry Lemon to create 80 swift boxes and a sculpture.

The number of swifts in Britain has fallen by 60 per cent in the last 25 years.

The birds tend to nest in house eaves after their migration from Africa, but they now find themselves on the 'red' list of threatened species.

The project's initial stage, completed earlier this month, saw the students design the artwork for the swift boxes.

Chief executive of Dorchester Living, Paul Silver, said: "We passionately believe that arts projects like this one can have a real benefit on the local community.

"The guidance from Kerry and the commitment from the school has been outstanding and we can’t wait to see the results this summer, when hopefully Heyford Park will be home to many new swifts."
