Banbury United is looking for a new chair following the decision of its current chairman to step down at the end of the season.

Ronnie Johnson announced his departure at December's annual general meeting to make way for fresh blood at the community-owned football club.

With approximately six weeks left until the end of the season, an appeal has been made for a volunteer to fill this position.

The club is facing opportunities and challenges including moving ground within the next few years, the construction of a new stadium, and substantial fund-raising initiatives, thus requiring a leader who could steer its future path.

Future plans include expanding the club across all footballing categories and improving sporting facilities in the area.

Mr Johnson said: "As the weeks go by, I am clearly aware that my chairmanship is coming to an end at the conclusion of season, be that April 20 or April 23, if we reach the Oxfordshire Senior Cup Final.

"I would, as highlighted many times, repeat the plea for people to come forward to volunteer in the many areas of the club and should someone out there be keen to look at the chairperson role, please contact me for discussion.

"There is never a more important time for the town of Banbury and all the authorities, the council, Sport England, Oxfordshire FA, to name a few, to get behind our important sporting community club."

He added: "I would add to any prospective candidates out there that Banbury United is a wonderful and supportive collective of sponsors and volunteers demonstrating hard work, commitment, support and true heart to get behind our home town club.

"This is something I have attempted to do either directly or indirectly – as a player, chairman, board member, volunteer, sponsor and supporter – over the past 50 years plus."

The role would involve steering important year-round decisions on how the club is run, on and off the pitch.

The ideal candidate would possess leadership expertise, passion for developing Banbury United, experience in overseeing major construction projects, and a network of potential investors and commercial partners.

In contrast to Mr Johnson's hands-on approach, the new chair role is primarily strategic.

The recruited individual will be supported by a board of at least six volunteer board members and a management team that operates the club on a daily basis.

A committee of business people is being formed to help the effort to move ground.
