A crucial level crossing has been closed for emergency works in Bicester.

The London Road at the level crossing has been closed to facilitate an emergency corrosion inspection and for Network Rail to change the rails.

The closure, which began yesterday (March 17), is between 1am and 7am and is expected to finish at 6am on March 19, according to Oxfordshire County Council documents.

There is a limited access being maintained for buildings in the area and emergency service vehicles.

The county council has suggested an alternative route via London Road, A4421, Launton Road, London Road and vice versa.

In a statement this morning, Bicester Town Council said: "Road closure required to repair the failure of safety-related components at the level crossing by Network Rail, expected to finish on March 19.

"We are waiting for the submission of the diversion route and will update as soon as possible."

The Oxford Mail has approached Network Rail for comment.
