ABOUT 16,000 tourists now visit Oxford every, according to the latest figures.

Oxford City Council will hear tomorrow that about 5.8m people made trips to the city in 2016, up from 5.5m in 2015, according to Experience Oxfordshire.

Green councillor Dick Wolff will quiz executive board member for culture and city centre, Mary Clarkson, about the number of tourists in the city over recent years.

She will say that about £831m was thought to have been driven into the city economy by the visitors in 2016 – four per cent more than had been generated the year before.

The figures come after the news earlier this month that the city council is looking into creating a special mobile phone app just for tourists to help them explore more easily.

The city council will meet at Oxford Town Hall from 5pm tomorrow.

Members of public are welcome to sit in on the session, as with all council meetings.
