A LORRY was stopped by police driving down the A34 yesterday, despite his on-board monitor showing he hadn't moved for the past nine hours.

The Turkish man, who was pulled over near Didcot, had his digital tachograph showing he was 'at rest'.

A tachograph is a device fitted to a vehicle that automatically records its speed and distance, together with the driver's activity selected from a choice of modes.

The man had used a magnet to fool the digital monitoring system.

In a series of tweets about the incident, Thames Valley Police said the truck was Bulgarian, trailer German and the driver was from Turkey with a German driving licence.

In a further tweet they added: "He's now going nowhere, truck is immobilised and big fines to pay. Driving tired puts us all at risk."

It comes after new figures recently revealed between January 2012 and August last year, there were 471 crashes on the A34, with nine people being killed.
