OXFORD West and Abingdon's MP Layla Moran said MPs 'took back control over Brexit' after they voted that the Government must ask MPs to approve the final deal when the UK leaves the EU.

The vote on amendment 7 to the Withdrawal Bill was supported by 309 MPs – including Ms Moran and Oxford East's Anneliese Dodds – on the eve of Brexit talks in Brussels.

Ms Moran said: “This humiliating Government defeat is a wake-up call for this Conservative-DUP Government.

"Hundreds of local residents emailed me asking me to support this amendment to ensure MPs can have a say over a Brexit deal that will affect people’s lives, jobs, the economy and public services like our NHS for generations to come."

But Ms Moran said she hoped it could mean another vote into Brexit would be held.

She added: “I’ll now be fighting to give the people, as well as Parliament, a say on whether to choose the final Brexit deal or to opt for an exit from Brexit.”

Another 305 MPs voted against the cross-party amendment, including Banbury MP Victoria Prentis and Henley's John Howell.

Didcot and Wantage's MP Ed Vaizey abstained from the vote.

In the aftermath of the vote on Wednesday night, Dominic Grieve, a leading Tory rebel, said he had been sent death threats and had reported them to the police.
