PERILOUS conditions thwarted thousands of pupils from returning to school on Tuesday, as temperatures crashed to their lowest in five years.

But schools look set to reopen this morning after two days of disruption.

Parts of the county plummeted past stinging lows of -9 degrees Celsius in the morning, freezing the remnants of Sunday’s heavy snowfall.

Though 222 of Oxfordshire’s schools were able to reopen following widespread closure yesterday, 55 remained shut and 20 opened late or only to certain classes.

Headteachers said icy conditions endangered pupils’ safety, with staff also reluctant to risk the drive in.

Several schools were forced to postpone trips, nativity plays and mock exams.

Despite a Met Office weather warning for ice being in place until 11am, it appears that all schools that were closed are due to reopen this morning, according to county council updates.
