IT was a scrumptious start to the day when staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford held their own 'bake off '.

Dozens of doctors and nurses in the emergency department entered sweet treats ranging from a pistachio pudding to a plate of 'helicopter cakes'.

Nurse Alan Hayward was crowned the overall winner after impressing everyone with his mouth-watering lemon drizzle at the event on Friday, September 22.

The sale was held to raise money for Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA), which has this month been running a fundraising campaign dubbed Bake Off for Take Off.

The JR bakers raised more than £200 in a few hours.

Research nurse Sally Beer said: "It’s great to fundraise for Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

"We work closely with the crew every day and Bake Off for Take Off was a perfect way of supporting the life-saving charity."

Air ambulance head of communications, Sarah Williamson, said she was delighted that the JR continued to support TVAA in its work.

She went on: "TVAA and the JR have strong links: a number of our doctors are based there, and the helicopter regularly transports patients to the specialist hospital. It’s brilliant to continue our professional relationship into the fundraising world."
