PROPOSALS agreed for a new junction in Oxford city centre have been welcomed by the head of a cycling campaign group.

A new junction, featuring a raised mini-roundabout, is to be built where Broad Street meets Holywell Street and Parks Road.

County council officers revealed earlier that damage to the traffic lights at the junction in July would cost £100,000 to repair and, like Frideswide Square, the new scheme costing about £50,000 will not feature lights.

Officers also said the signals were ‘obsolete’ due to reduced traffic flow in recent years.

Simon Hunt, chairman of cycling campaign group Cyclox, told the environment delegated decisions committee yesterday that the group supported the ‘interim’ proposal.

He added: “Some vehicles and cyclists approach the junction too fast and the raised junction should induce a degree of traffic calming - this should be monitored following its introduction.

“Many cyclists would prefer a shared space design with cleaner informal crossings.”

In 2007 Oxford University student Tsz Fok died when his bike was hit by a truck at the junction.

Mr Hunt added: “We lament the decade it has taken to remove the traffic signals.”
