A DRIVER whose car flipped over, rolled into a front garden and smashed into a lamppost knocking it over had a 'lucky escape', firefighters said.

The un-named motorist was discovered trapped inside the vehicle on Abingdon Road, Steventon, at 9.30pm on Thursday.

Firefighters from Didcot and Abingdon were called to the accident and discovered the shocking scene.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has now issued a statement warning others to drive at 'appropriate speeds' for the time of day and weather conditions.

The service said when its crews arrived at Steventon on Thursday night, "they were faced with a single vehicle that had rolled off the road and into a front garden of a house; the car had also hit a lamppost which was felled due to the speed and force of the impact".

The car came to rest on its side with the driver trapped inside and needing medical assistance.

Fire crews cut the roof of the car off and paramedics took care of the rest.

Police are now investigating the incident.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service station manager Paul Webster, who attended the incident, said: "The driver had a very lucky escape, managing to avoid serious injury having left the road, rolled the car and hit a lamppost.

"I would like to remind all drivers to pay full regard to the road conditions, being mindful of how their driving needs to be appropriate for the time of day and weather."
