MORE than £700 has been raised by the neighbours of a Polish family who had their home destroyed in a fire.

Steve Hurd helped set up an online campaign after learning his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Mick Trafford, had gone to the aid of the family when their Kidlington home went up in flames last Friday.

The 55-year-old said he hoped even the smallest amount of generosity would help the family.

He said: "I got a call from my sister telling me what happened.

"They had to go in and rescue the woman who was in the shower at the time. It sounded absolutely horrendous.

"Sue is the type of person who would do a lot for others, and she was thinking about ways to try and fundraise for this family after losing everything. She did not know how to do an online campaign so I set it up for her."

In under a week, more than £716 has been raised for the five-year-old boy, his mother and grandfather, who all escaped the burning home in Basset Way.

Mr Hurd added: "As far as I am aware, the family are now safe.

"I know the mum sustained some burns, though. You wouldn't wish this on anyone."

Police believe the fire was lit deliberately with intent to endanger life and are appealing for information to help with their investigations.
